​Warrigal Road State School e​mbraces diversity and celebrates all cultures. Australia Day ​

Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. It is observed annually on 26 January. It marks the 1788 landing of the First Fleet, and raising of the Union Flag by Arthur Phillip, at Sydney Cove in New South Wales. It is a national public holiday since 1988.  It celebrates all the things Australians love about their country, such as land, lifestyle, democracy, and people.

Chinese New Year

Is the Chinese festival marking the start of the new year, beginning on the second new moon after the winter solstice and ending on the full moon fifteen days later. It is marked by visits to family and friends, special meals, fireworks, and gift giving.  Chinese New Year will be celebrated January 29th 2025.

 Harmony day

Harmony Day is an Australian Government program that centers on the message that “Everyone belongs”, reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians. This year Harmony week will take place from 18th March to 24th March.  Since 1999, thousands of Harmony Day events have been staged in childcare centers, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies across Australia.
​Warrigal Road State School celebrates Harmony Day in March annually. Students are welcome to dress in cultural costume or orange.

Holi

Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates spring, love, and new life.

Some families hold religious ceremonies, but for many Holi is more a time for fun. It's a colourful festival, with dancing, singing and throwing of powder paint and coloured water.

Holi is also known as the "festival of colours".

In 2025 Holi will begin on Friday 14th March.

Easter

Easter is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial following his crucifixion.  These days, lots of people celebrate it by giving and receiving chocolate Easter eggs, and sometimes going on a hunt for them too! At Warrigal Road we are also lucky enough to have the Easter Bunny visit us! Easter will be celebrated Sunday 20th April 2025.

Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims around the world fast from dawn to sunset.  2025 it falls on the evening of Thursday 27th February and goes through to Saturday March 29th, dependant on the Lunar Cycle. It is a time of spiritual reflection and devotion, as well as an opportunity to strengthen one's faith and practice self-discipline. During this month, Muslims abstain from food and drink during the day and focus on acts of worship, charity, and kindness towards others.​

​Eid

​Eid is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of the month-long dawn to sunset fasting of Ramadan.  It is a time of joy and blessing for the entire Muslim community and a time for distributing one’s wealth amongst others that are not as fortunate. In 2025 Eid falls on the evening of Sunday 30th of March until Monday 31st March.

Korean Children's Day​

Children’s Day is celebrated on May 5th every year and is a full-blown legal holiday in South Korea.  It is a day to appreciate and cherish the young ones in our lives.  On this day, various events and activities are held to entertain and educate children.  Many businesses offer special promotions and discounts to families with children.​

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Childrens' Day

On the 4th of August across the nation we celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Childrens' Day.  This special day is an opportunity for us to show our support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that culture, family and community play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child.

Fiji Day

Fiji Day is observed on October 10 each year. Fiji Day is the culmination of Fiji Week, a period celebrating the Fijian people’s culture, religion, and history. It’s a time for happiness and festivities, but it’s also a time for introspection and remembrance. Fiji Day is celebrated in Australia and New Zealand as well.

Diwali

The word Diwali means 'rows of lighted lamps'.  Diwali is known as the 'festival of lights' because houses, shops and public places are decorated with small oil lamps called 'diyas'. Diwali always falls some time between October and November, but the exact date varies each year as the Hindu calendar is based on the Moon. In 2024, Diwali is on Thursday 31st October until Friday 1st November.

Christmas

Christmas (which means "Feast day of Christ") is a Christian holiday that refers to the birth of Jesus (whom Christians believe is the Son of God), and a cultural holiday for non-Christians. The day known as Christmas Day is celebrated on the 25th day of December. Santa Claus, Father Christmas, is a favoured character during this time, often bringing presents to children who are not on the naughty list.
